I Need To Be Better At Waking Up
I was walking down the hallway at the office today, when from a distance I spotted our CEO walking down the same hallway. He turned left to go into a conference room, I turned right to go to the restroom. That brief encounter, well if you could call it an encounter, reminded me of a conversation we had a year ago during our company's Thanksgiving potluck. He shared how he "wakes up" in the morning and it goes something like this: the alarm rings, he turns off his alarm and immediately puts both his feet on the ground. He called it his "ten toes on the ground" habit. Once his toes are on the ground, he says he's ready to start his day and proceeds to get up and start getting things done.
That conversation stayed with me as I was making my way to the restroom. It led me to reflect on what I did when I woke up today. It went something like this: the alarm rings, I hit snooze and went back to sleep. The alarm rings again, I hit snooze and went back to sleep again. The alarm rings again and this time I turned it off. Then I sat on the bed and wrapped myself with a blanket while I tried to wake myself up. I stayed like that for what, 5-10 minutes maybe. Comical.
As you can see, my waking up routine is not exactly worthy of being published on a magazine. Compare that to my CEO's wake up routine and you could see why he's a CEO and I'm not.
Now my goal is not to be the CEO of a company. But I aim to be a better version of myself everyday. And this lazy, sloth like way of waking up is not going to cut it. Not to mention, it is a bad look for my kids. Look at dad wrapped up in a blanket trying to wake up, what a joke.
If I want to get ahead in life and be a role model for my kids, I need to change how I wake up in the morning. I should give this "ten toes on the ground" habit a try.
